In the Season 2 premiere of Thrive’s Healing Journey, Dr. Kate Oland sits down with Carbon Leaf guitarist Terry Clark to explore what healing really looks like after major orthopedic surgery. After a fall on the ice resulted in multiple rotator cuff tears and ultimately surgical repair, Terry suddenly found himself navigating pain, loss of independence, accepting help, and the long road back to performing. Their conversation moves beyond the mechanics of surgery to explore the emotional side of recovery: learning patience with your body, allowing others to care for you, adapting when your body can’t do what it once could, and gradually rebuilding the confidence to trust it again. Along the way, Dr. Kate puts on her anatomy-instructor and physical-therapist hats to turn Terry’s experience into an accessible lesson in anatomy and kinesiology. Using the shoulder as a real-life case study, she explains why the highly mobile glenohumeral joint sacrifices bony stability for movement, how the humeral head interacts with the shallow glenoid fossa, and how the four muscles of the rotator cuff work together to provide both movement and dynamic stability. Terry’s injury—including complete tears of the supraspinatus and infraspinatus—provides a fascinating illustration of how individual muscles, joints, and movement patterns affect everyday function. The conversation also explores physical therapy, progressive strengthening, functional movement, and the importance of integrating rehabilitation into daily life rather than viewing recovery as something that happens only during a PT appointment. Ultimately, Terry’s story is about much more than repairing a shoulder. It is a story of resilience, adaptation, community, and learning to prioritize self-care. From figuring out how to play guitar with almost no shoulder movement, to relying on his family and bandmates, to eventually incorporating strengthening into everyday activities, Terry demonstrates that healing rarely means simply returning to exactly who we were before an injury. Sometimes it means starting again from where we are, celebrating small victories, and discovering new ways to care for the body that carries us through the work and people we love. As Terry’s journey reminds us, healing takes time—but with persistence, support, humor, and a willingness to keep showing up, our limitations can become part of a much bigger story of growth.
